These beautiful Tudor wall paintings show how well-decorated the home of a wealthy Tudor merchant would have been. Today, they have faded to black and white, but originally, they would probably have been brightly coloured. Historians think the paintings come from the late 16th century, and they are an example of the Renaissance style which came to England from Germany and the Netherlands around this time. Builders uncovered them when they were renovating the building in 1968. Archaeologist Andrew Armstrong said the paintings had given a "beautiful insight into how well decorated and maintained domestic space was in Tudor Gloucester". He thinks that the decorations mean the room was a dining hall or sitting room used to entertain guests.
